Gallio fragment dating paul
Did Gallio , like Pilate, bow to public wish? No, he would not even entertain the case (vers. 14, 15). He meant that the question of religious differences came not within the authority of a civil magistrate. On this principle the Roman government generally acted. Gallio , as a magistrate, acted justly —. 1. Towards himself. The magistrate who interferes with the religious opinions of the people incurs a responsibility too great for any man to bear.
A fragment of the Gallio Inscription found in the City of Delphi. Ruins of the Delphi Amphitheater. Ruins of the Apollo Temple in Delphi, Greece. In Acts 18:12, the Bibletells us that there was a man named Gallio who was the proconsul of the area of Achaia during the ministry of Paul . A proconsul is a government official similar to a governor or mayor. This piece of information is important because of a letter sent by the Roman Emperor during this time. By being able to date this part of Paul ’s work, we can get a good understanding of when Paul visited other churches during his missionary journeys. Once again, not only does archaeology help show that the Bible is accurate, it also helps us to understand more about what was going on during Bible times.
Paul begins preaching full time in Corinth, and stays a year and a half in the city. Then some of his Jewish opponents hatch a conspiracy against him, bringing him before the Roman Proconsul, Gallio , for judgment. Archeologists have discovered a first century inscription at Delphi, in central Greece, that contains a proclamation of the Emperor Claudius. This proclamation refers to Gallio as the Roman Proconsul of Greece in the year in which it was issued. That year corresponds to 52 AD, which is the approximate date of Paul ’s Corinthian trial. Proconsuls generally served for only one year. Thi

The Gallio inscription, now exhibited in the museum at Delphi, provides the date for the time when Gallio was proconsul. This, in turn, helps us build a chronology for Paul ’s ministry. Based on this information we generally think of Paul entering Corinth in the fall of A.D. 51, and leaving in the spring of A.D. 53. Our photo shows the “judgment seat” (Greek, bema) in the agora (marketplace) at Corinth. The Acrocorinth is the mountain in the background. The Temple of Aphrodite stood on the Acrocorinth in New Testament times. Earlier I have written two posts on dealing with Corinth. Check here f
14 Just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to them, "If you Jews were making a complaint about some misdemeanor or serious crime, it would be reasonable for me to listen to you. 15 But since it involves questions about words and names and your own law—settle the matter yourselves. I will not be a judge of such things." However, precisely dating the expulsion from Suetonius provides some challenges because Suetonius writes in a topical rather than chronological fashion, necessitating the use of other texts to pinpoint the time.[23][24][1] The dating of the "edict of Claudius" for the expulsion of Jews relies on three separate texts beyond Suetonius' own reference, which in chronological order are
Inscriptions exist which date Gallio ’s term as proconsul in this area between July of 51 to July of 52. By using this archaeological evidence, we can start to use the events of Acts 18:12-17, where Paul was taken by the Jews to stand trial by Gallio , as a fixed marker from which they can determine with relative certainty dates for events before and after Paul ’s stay in Corinth. Using details from Acts and working forward from the date of the Gallio Inscription mentioned earlier, we can also place the beginning of Paul ’s third missionary journey described in Acts 18 – 21 to having begun around 52 or 53 A.D. The Biblical account tells us that after returning to Jerusalem from this journey Paul was arrested and ultimately appeared before both Festus and Felix, who were Roman officials (Acts 23-25).
